If you have decided that you want to adopt a cat, then you have already made one big decision, then ext is to actually go out and choose a cat. There is never a lack of cats ready to be adopted, so you will not have to look far for one, but you may want to look a bit for one that you really like–remember you are agreeing to take care of this cat for the rest of its life and a well taken cared-of cat can live up to twenty years!
Start by looking at a local rescue shelter, these are cats who have no home and need one very badly. Often these cats will be given to your for free after the shelter checks your references. You may have to pay a couple dollars which will go toward the cost of the cats shots and previous care, but it usually isn’t much. If you cannot find a shelter, or did not like the cats that were there, you can try Craigslist or the newspaper. The people who list these cats will often ask for a small fee, this is usually only to deter those who wish to take the cats and then resell them (this happens a lot!).

Make sure you ask the previous owners whether the cat has gotten her shots or not. Also ask whether the cat has been neutered. Additionally, you should find out what brand of food the cat has been eating. Continue her on the food she was given. If you want to feed her a better food, then slowly switch from one to the other. Even if the new food is higher quality, if she is used to the other food, you can give her a stomach ache by switching the food too rapidly.
